THAT TIME WE WERE STRUCK BY LIGHTNING
extremely early on in our connection – I’m speaking within the very first week or so – Mrs romance as well as I were struck by lightning. I don’t indicate in the love-struck sense or in some poetic charming rhetoric. I indicate we were really hit by a bolt of lightning. This is our story.
It’s always fascinating to discover out what makes two people stay together – what makes a connection tick. In the exact same what we like hearing stories about exactly how couples very first satisfied (here’s our story), finding why they’re still together can be one of the most appealing aspects to a relationship.
For us it’s all about shared experiences. Happy, sad, exciting, unforeseen (even the humdrum) stuff that occurs brings type to a partnership.
And a few of the things that occur to you both have long-lasting bonding consequences – just like the time we were struck by lightning.
That time we were struck by lightning
At the time, I was living in the lovely suburb of Paddington in Sydney’s east, in a not so charming share-house with a lot of backpackers. Mrs romance on the other hand was living one suburb over in Centennial Park. She was living with her good friend in an outstanding old home that was later pulled down as well as a block of 5 apartments now stands there.
Her home was great. It had a bit lawn as well as a cars and truck area round the back, as well as was ideal next door to the then Sydney Football stadium as well as the SCG.
As this was at the time of the Sydney Olympics – yes, we’ve been together that long – the two stadiums were being utilized all the time. It was such a excellent time to be living in Sydney.
One night I was round Mrs Romance’s location for dinner. I keep in mind the clouds around the city were the strangest colour – made even complete stranger by the lights from the stadium across the road.
Just after we’d eaten, the rain started as well as there was a deep roll of thunder.
It turned out both of us have a like of storms. enjoying them as well as feeling the forces of nature autumn from the sky.
We stepped out into the backyard to take a much better look at the night sky. playing the gentleman, I grabbed an umbrella as well as held it over us. Neither believed that was a poor concept at the time as the big, heavy droplets of rain tattled down overhead.
The sky was all type of colours: greens, purples, blues… it was beautiful. a lot more thunder boomed overhead as well as we held each other closer.
I was holding the umbrella with my ideal hand with my left arm around Mrs Romance’s shoulders when it happened.
There was an extraordinary flash of dazzling white as well as the next thing we understood we were standing 10 feet apart. We just stared at each other.
We couldn’t believe what had just happened.
After we’d made sure we were both ok, we went back inside. We’d escaped injury by some miracle. Mrs Romance’s left carry where my hand had been was a bit numb.
As for me, my ideal index finger, which had slipped off the wooden manage of the umbrella onto the metal shaft, was tingling as well as sore. The nail on that finger has never been the exact same since; the cuticle never grows properly, as well as the surface of the nail is always dimpled as well as uneven.
The umbrella was fine.
We believe that the lightning had struck the tree or the washing line, or perhaps even Mrs R’s cars and truck parked behind us, as well as had bounced onto the umbrella. It’s called a side flash.
The strangest thing is neither of us truly keeps in mind hearing the thunderclap. The one that got us.
A bit like the method that electrical energy makes a balloon stay with your shirt, maybe this is why Mrs romance as well as I have stayed together so long. We’ve both been positively charged!*
* I understand in physics terms, if we were both positively charged, we’d repel one one more – however it sounded much better for us both to be ‘positive’!
